About

Kamel Berkouk was born in Mulhouse in 1967. As soon as he finished his secondary education he devoted himself passionately to art and decided to continue his studies in École des beaux art Mulhouse, where he assimilated with great ease all the techniques of drawing and painting.

Berkouk is an enigma, a man of secrets, instincts and emotions. His work is a mystery that must be discovered little by little by interpreting and feeling each centimetre of a painting or a sculpture. “It is up to you to interpret, to feel. The characters come out of my paintings. Everyone finds meaning.” he said.

Everything in his art is pure: line, form, colour, drawing and expression. The base is primitive, instinctive, almost animal and although the artist has an academic education, we feel a strong approach in the search for a raw and naive art that seems to draw from the origins of. art. It is this connection with the roots of aesthetics that causes an inexplicable and visceral emotion.

He has had several successful exhibitions in Basel, Berlin, Chicago, Miami, Monaco, New York, Paris and Zurich. Berkouk has the scale of a great master of the twentieth century with a unique collection of more than five thousand works that is divided into three major periods: Neo-expressionism, primitivism and contemporary art.
